Obese Teens 9 times more likely to be Obese adults

Clark Kents avatarScientists have found that obese teenagers are 9 times more likely to grow up to be obese adults.

I was watching TV the other day and saw a story where scientists had discovered that obese teens where 9 times more likey than normal teens to become obese adults.

Firstly, duh!

Second, this puts the responsibility square on the parents. I am sure that if they went further down the track they would find that 'larger' yond kids were much more likely to grow up to be 'larger' teenagers.

Sure the teenagers can do something about it and try and change their learnt ways but if their environment is fattening then what chance do they have.

not always the parents

Its not always the parents fault.

I saw this kid on tv in america that was huge and his parents said they dont know what is causing it but at the same time they are sitting down to a massive lasagna for dinner. smart one.

But other times there are genetics or kids that eat junk food outside of the home and dont tell their parents. I never eat junk at home, only when im out and about. Im not obese, in not even fat but I have seen other people get fat when they eat good at home and terrible when out.

kids like parents

Sure, its not always the parents fault. There can be exceptions to the rule but in general I see fat kids and look for parents that are the same shape.

Is this because I am biased, no. Its because all my life I have seen that parents body shape has a big influence on child body shape.

I knew a very skinny kid in school and ya know what, the kids parents were skinny as. Actually, one was very skinny and the other was a bit big, but yeah, the kids do look like the parents.

K, I can sorta see what you are sayin but its not always true, just as you said too. I do have the same body shape as my parents too.

Maybe its in genes or whatever

parents, food producers, government

As unpolitical as it sounds, I think Clark has a good point here.

There can be exceptions to the rule but in general I see fat kids and look for parents that are the same shape

I consider myself a non-discriminating person but I realise that I often see families with the same body shape and draw judgement on the parents.

Hey, we could just blame society. It is getting harder to get unrefined produce and there is a larger range of 'unhealty' food available today. If we can't get healthy food then its the fault of the food producers, but then isn't it also the fault of the government for allowing the degradation in food quality.

Some countries have strict food laws that do not allow for modern additives and refinements to be made to certain produce. This gives us the government controlled choice of better food if we want.

.. but then it is still up to the parents to buy it.
